Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) is one of the 34 provinces of Indonesia. Wedged between Bali and the small island of Komodo, it tries to carve on the tourist map of Indonesia a place. Bali, to its west is, of course, the leading and most well-known tourist destination, so much so that abroad the island is very often a private land believed to be. Komodo Island - the part of East Nusa Tenggara province is - in the east, a strong attraction for those interested in the greatest "dragon" of the world can be seen.

Despite the official government efforts NTB promote as a tourist destination, the province with its western neighbor in the shadow remains, although the beaches are wonderful white sand dreams and the wooded interior offers a range attractions for eco-tourists and those who like roughing it.

, the most important tourist centers are Senggigi, with favorite hotels and resorts on the west coast and the three Gilis, three small islands, visited the north of there, especially by backpackers.

, the second island of the province, Sumbawa, more might have to offer in terms of secluded white sand beaches, natural scenery. However, the main drawback is the very difficult process of getting there. The capital of the island is Bima, which gets a less than favorable press in most guidebooks usually. Most visitors, say the leaders, is different for the surfing beach at Dompu or Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park at the first opportunity. The lack of tourist facilities is another reason that the island is not visited much by non-surfing tourists, which is rather unfortunate, as parts of the island are very nice.

The most striking feature of the island is Mount Tambora. Just over 0 years ago, on April 10, 1815 broke the volcano in what was the biggest volcanic explosion in recorded history. The explosion of the global climate for years afterwards changed and the direct death of more than 70,000 people. Hundreds of thousands more subsequently died as a result of disease and starvation.

The debris measured around 175 cubic kilometers by the eruption, or enough to cover Jakarta in 280 meters of ash and volcanic rock particles. The ash cloud rose to 33 kilometers and reached well into the stratosphere and winds moved quickly ashes around the globe, what vivid sunsets.

The explosions were heard as far away as Sumatra. The treatise by Sir Stamford Raffles, who was on Java then includes this excerpt:

The first explosions on this island in the evening could be heard from April 5, they were noticed in each quarter, and continued at intervals until the next day. The noise was, almost everywhere ascribed in the first instance in distant cannon; so much so that a detachment of troops marched from Djocjocarta, in the belief that an adjacent post was attacked, and along the coast boats were in two in search of a supposed ship in distress sent instances.

The ash cloud caused global cooling, the failures and widespread famine crop led. In Europe, for example, in 1816 as the "year without a summer" known

Mount Rinjani on Lombok, at 3726 meters -. The second highest volcano in Indonesia - is the equivalent of Tambora. A massive outbreak in the mid-13th century is believed to have triggered the global cooling, crop failures and hunger, too. The caldera contains a crater lake at 2,000 meters above sea level. The mountains and lakes are sacred both by the Sasak, the original inhabitants of Lombok and Balinese Hindus in Lombok.

started The presence of a fairly large group of Balinese Hindus in the early 17th century and by 1750, the Balinese take control of the entire island had taken. Internal rivalry in a row, but the island is divided into four Balinese kingdoms, and in 1838 the Mataram empire finally took overall control. Relations between the Balinese and the local Sasak, however, were quite tense, especially in the eastern part of the island. And while one of the many peasant uprisings, asked the Sasak the Dutch in Bali for help. The Dutch Governor General responded in 1894 to this requirement with an army to Lombok to send and after heavy fighting, and the near destruction of Mataram, the Dutch took control of the island in 1895.

After the Encyclopaedie van Nederlandsch-Indië of 1917 the Dutch to be remembered as "liberators" of Lombok, but this is of course a rather biased statement.

The Sasak are the largest ethnic group on Lombok and the majority adheres to Islam, but two version of Islam are professed- Waktu Lima and Wetu Telu . The former, Waktu Lima (five times), refers to the five daily prayers Muslims are required to perform. Wetu Telu (three symbols) in the Sasak language is also based on the Muslim religion, and by his followers they were the first who came from the Wali Songo (nine holy preachers) that are converted to Islam of Java in the 17th century. Set foot on the island in the village of Bayan and built the first mosque is.

Wetu Telu is essentially a simplified version of Islam in connection with ancestor worship and a strong belief in ghosts. Interpretation of what the three symbols represent very different. To some it's ancestors, God and human life; it could birth, life and death to others; Sun, moon and stars; or heaven, earth and water. Wetu Telu Muslims pray three times a day, and the Ramadhan fasting month is nine days shall be shortened only of fasting. They moreover enthusiastically hunt and consume wild boars, with the strong rice wine watered for brewing.

Today, very few Sasak will openly admit that they as religious intolerance has increased Wetu Telu Muslims. In the last decade there have been regular outbreaks of violence against Ahmadi Muslims have been followers of the Ahmadiyya sect. Under the motto: Destroy the Ahmadis, the shame to Islam bring ..., they were expelled from their villages and saw their houses destroyed. They ended up in poorly equipped shelters, where they found that it was almost impossible to put on the support of the government social service system, in order to survive. The only way out of the accommodations get seems to be to convert the conventional version of Islam. No wonder that the Wetu Telu Muslims today will announce that they are "modern" Waktu Lima Muslims.

But deep in the woods on Mount Rinjani some shrines have remained. Ceremonies held there on certain days, to ensure that the spirits are appeased or no damage to the villages. And the villagers could tell you of walkers turned to stone because they do not have to honor the spirits and were discourteous in nature. But that is another story, the trekkers should perhaps be careful
