Life’s a Beach at Tanjung Bira

"I go to search for potentially a large "
-. can François Rabelais

There are not many things in life to be who are better than a sandy beach in the tropics. They do not corrode, they do not break and they do not even have a maintenance (unlike many other things I could mention!) Inspired dreams. And if we're lucky, we can also get to visit once in a while.

find for this fabled oasis in the sun, is not as easy as it once was, however, and unlike 20 or 30 years ago, when you could just hop on a Garuda flight to Bali , a little more effort is now required to get a really nice Indonesian beach that is not overrun by tourists or spoiled by rubbish.

A truly remote and isolated beach is not, however, an option for many people - either because of the time and effort required to get there, or because of lack of adequate housing (which this dream vacation in a proverbial holiday can turn into hell).

So if someone told me of the sandy beaches on the southern tip of the dramatically shaped island of Sulawesi - on the map it look straight! - I was naturally intrigued

The beaches in a place near Tanjung Bira are known and to get there, you must first fly into the busy city Makassar .. That's the easy part. Then it is on a hour long five fifty-five ride what Indonesia, is a remarkably good way of you. By small traditional Bugis cities and villages and extensive coastal salt levels as you finally bringing you closer to Bira

The Bugis live in good-looking and often brightly painted wooden houses ( rumah Panggung ), which are built on stilts. This is to protect against wild animals to offer (okay, I made that up) and keep the houses airy and cool, but also see them as if they could withstand some pretty severe flooding. A traditional solution Jakarta perennial floods, perhaps?

in the street about 15km from the Tanjung Bira of boat building village Tanah Beru is. The construction of the traditional Phinisi (saver) has been done here for hundreds of years, now, and you will probably Phinisi already seen if you've ever visited the old Sunda Kelapa port in Jakarta. After one of the young boatbuilders I spoke at Tanah Beru, the construction of these magnificent boats by complying with the "knowledge" were taken through the generations, without actual boat building plans or ever conducted measurements - an amazing thought by elaborate ceremonies, as everything written or at the present time seems taken.

All existing doubts about the seaworthiness of ships are eliminated, of which apparently involved the initiation of newly built saver over the bodies of seven pregnant before. Luckily for all prospective mothers in the area, this particular ceremony is no longer carried out (maybe the locals that the ceremony to recognize, came to the future generations had a more negative impact, instead of bringing something good luck).

you know that you have arrived in Tanjung Bira, when you edge to this dreaded roadside ~~ POS = HEADCOMP medallions come when you are asked to pay what is known in Indonesia as "retaliatory" so winning. But there is no goal, there is no real reason to stop and that's exactly what the locals do; Go straight through without stopping. Just to say.

First impressions of Tanjung Bira are not really that great to be honest. It has this kind of tired and neglected the feeling of a place that has struggled due to a lack of visitors. Bit like Anyer and Carita in Banten; Ghost towns by the sea.

But Tanjung Bira is not really a place. It is two. It is the Tanjung Bira on weekends when it is packed with domestic tourists - mainly from Makassar and near Bulukumba -. And the Tanjung Bira in the week, if it is right to leave much

Dig deeper and Tanjung Bira reveals his secrets. First of all, the beach of Tanjung Bira - not just bad though - is not that great. However, only 3 km away is located near Bara beach and this beach is a real find with its wonderful fine sand and crystal clear turquoise sea, which is abruptly to dark blue when the water is deep. His so remote, it is very quiet and peaceful.

But Indonesia would not be Indonesia without something totally unexpected and whacky going. In Bira case, it is a modest-sized "entertainment" district located away from the bustle of the city complete with shady bungalows and a colorful selection of cheap karaoke bars. "Hindari pergaulan bebas & narkoba" (to avoid free sex and drugs), reads a sign outside a particularly dilapidated house. Well, you know what they say about sailors and seamen ...

Beach view of Tanjung Bira

Briefly, Tanjung Bira is an ideal destination for experienced travelers a little solitude and clean, secluded beaches search. More adventurous can dive there even - though the currents can be strong - and some decent snorkeling on the nearby islands is generally possible (depending on weather conditions and the conditions of the sea). WiFi in Bira is unfortunately rarer than a sighting of a Javanese tiger, so do not expect to get access to the network. Bring a few books instead - or even better, your lover. After all, this is a holiday, it is not
