Saudara Dalam Sejarah: uncovering the history of Indonesia Forgotten Exiles - Exiles Warsito, Sarkawi, Nardan, Tom Iljas at a cemetery in Stockholm.

in the 1960s, Sukarno sent to study thousands of students abroad, inter alia, China. After the 1965 anti-communist massacres in which more than 500,000 Indonesians were killed, the new government accused Suharto to study abroad support Sukarno and revoke their passports and citizenships. Left stateless such students were abroad and forced to seek asylum to have remained largely Persona non grata in Indonesia.

Significantly, one of the exiles deported recently after trying in a mass grave to pray, where his family is buried. Saudara Dalam Sejarah (My Dear Homeland), which premiered at the Rekoleksi Memori Film Festival in Jakarta on 5 December, tells the stories of eight such exiles. The festival was supported by movies that matter, an initiative of Amnesty International. Indonesia Expat caught with the filmmakers of the documentary.

She had recently while filming in Padang, West Sumatra some effort. Can you tell me about

YEB :? We went to Padang with Tom Ilyas, an exile from Sweden, who visited Indonesia last year. There we went to visit his father's grave - he was one of the victims of the tragedy 1965th We found that a barn had been built on the mass grave. We asked permission from the stall owners there to pray, but he refused. Soon after we left the mass grave, we were deported arrested by civilian police and Tom Ilia "for failure safety".

to reconsider the current government seems reluctant to the past. Why do you think, is it?

YEB: The perpetrators of the 1965 tragedy are still in power and do not want to disclose what actually took place. Unfortunately, it seems that the new government does not want either 1965 talk

AK .: It is not easy to raise awareness of what is happening these days in the year 1965th Events over time - such as the meeting on the 1965 tragedy at last year's Ubud Writers and Readers Festival - are banned by the government

What inspired you to make Saudara Dalam Sejarah [ ?

AK : I have Tom Ilyas known - one of the exiles currently living in Sweden - since 04, I knew that he was not able to return for Indonesia to come for a long time. He was sent to study of Sukarno in China, so he could come to Indonesia again, to build the country. But the new order regime accused him of being Communist Party (Indonesia) a member of the PKI and took away his passport. His story has inspired me to make this film

YEB . to produce the idea Saudara Dalam Sejarah was born in 2013 after Tom Ilyas came to Jakarta and told us that Indonesians who in 1965 held a meeting at the end of each September at the grave of her in exile living friend in Sweden had been banished. At the end we have in Europe - 2014 to shoot for three weeks in September

What have you noticed you asked about the attitude and lifestyle of exiles in Europe - Sweden, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands?

AK : We met exiled between 70 and 85. at the age I was very impressed with how connected to Indonesia they are still. They still love their home. Many of them have worked as laborers and live modestly lives.

YEB : all exiles we live modestly met - they all survive have had to work hard. The wonderful thing is, they are always on the lookout for updates on Indonesia and the political situation in the country to discuss. You are so eager to read books from Indonesia that assigning each month a portion of their money specifically to buy books. In Amsterdam, Holiday Bung is Sarmadji is full of books on Indonesia; his little apartment is like a library

GGG . While all exiles we are questioned, it is obvious that they have to work hard all their lives in retirement. You are now satisfied with a modest existence. You have family and friends in Europe, but their hearts remain in Indonesia.

Is there still a lot of sadness about what has happened among men in 1965 who were banned from Indonesia?

YEB : I felt much sadness and longing. Actually sometimes I felt as if I was back in Indonesia, when I entered some of their homes in Europe. The song lists in their cars are all Indonesian songs. These people were the best of the best, and excelled in their fields of study. For this reason, it is sent from Sukarno to study in China. They were meant to do great things on their return to Indonesia. What a great loss for our country.

Although the people we live questioned far from Indonesia

, some of them are still afraid to talk about what happened in 1965. Intimidation still exists and the trauma is still there, even after the fall of Suharto. Unfortunately, we were unable to find women unable ready to be filmed.

Warsito (left) and Tom Ilia (right).

AK : this is saddest for me that they still have the desire to die, in Indonesia. You still think of Indonesia as their homeland

GGG :. Most of the exiles we met traumatized still by the events of 1965. Some of them still worry about their families in Indonesia, so far as they do not even want to visit the country. They fear that if they visit Indonesia, their families will be harassed by the government.

What do you think is the current level of awareness and understanding of the events that took place in Indonesia in 1965?

YEB : While a large part of the young generation Indonesia is curious about the past, some do not even know who was Suharto. Even after 50 years, this tragedy has never been properly recognized. Indonesia can only learn from the past, having addressed what actually happened. We hope that this process will contribute by Saudara Dalam Sejarah

AK .: For more than three decades of the Suharto administration, we were forced to their version of learn what took place. We were informed that the 1965 coup the PKI was perpetrated. There was nothing about human rights violations in our history books. We plan to screen the film in a number of other cities - especially in the universities and schools - in 2016

GGG : Many people who have been indoctrinated by the Suharto regime , The information has been passed on to the younger generation. We must ensure that the youth of today can access the true story.

Do you think that it is important to keep events, such Rekoleksi Memori in Indonesia?

YEB : Tanjung Priok, Talang Sari, Trisakti, Semanggi I & II, Marsinah, Udin, Wasior and many more: many human rights violations have taken place since 1965th Human rights violations are still ongoing.

Rekoleksi Memori is an attempt to remind the past of individual memories to eliminate the collection of the violence of the New Order hegemony. It is important that today's youth is exposed to what has taken place, to ensure that it does not happen again in the future. Rekoleksi Memori is a step in this direction

AK .: Much of the Indonesian youth do not know their own history. It is a sad reality. Rekoleksi Memori informed of the sad events of 1965. The most important message is to educate young people behind the festival that violence never be used, even if the people have different ideologies or perceptions.

GGG : I wish that Jokowi was brave enough, on behalf of the Indonesian government to apologize about this issue and we speak
