Abe-do Organic Warung, is 2 km from Ubud, in Banjar Kaja Kutuh, was created a year ago with only three spoons, three knives, three forks and five glasses. It was difficult for Nyoman Sukarsa, to come to the former artist and gardener with the start-up costs of Rp.2 million. There was not much change for kitchen utensils and extra supplies.
Nyoman was motivated to go organic when his wife, Sri, became very ill and he started a natural, healthy way to source for them to get back to good health. With the help of herbs, jamu (traditional medicine) and the switch to organic wholefoods, Sri is now healthy, full of energy and will work full time at the warung. The food they serve is fresh, organic where possible and created on site from scratch. Nothing is pre-made or glasses, cans or bottles. It's a real labor of love.
The organic farmer, Mr Hartono, located only 2 km away and it offers seasonal organic fruit and vegetables, and delivers to the restaurant daily. Nyoman explained: "My warung is only 70% organically, because I can not provide certified organic chicken and meat The meat costs are four times the regular price and I simply can not afford to charge these prices.."
Nyoman told me how he feels blessed by the patrons who visit the warung. "An American man helped me out and put Abe-do on Trip Advisor and then another person helped me to make a Facebook page. Now people come from far and near to my organic food and taste organic Bali coffee . I'm so happy and the business is doing very well. "
Nyoman and Sri now have twenty cups twenty glasses and things will get better. The cool music melodies play in the warung, are of a small iPod dock, which recently donated by a Canadian Patron. Nyoman told me how he feels blessed by all these random acts of kindness and "Angel", which fall within his warung. A great little success story with courage and faith on a tight budget and an example of how started from little things, big things grow .
