One of the ultimate tools of the revolution is the art. So even revolutionary ideas often encourage revolutionary optics - posters and symbols that the hopes of those fighting, embody against the old order. Art is also the victory in the search for iconic images that embody the principles of the revolution.

The father of Indonesia's first president Sukarno, also understood the need to forge a truly Indonesian art movement of the creation of a national identity that transcends religious, ethnic and linguistic divisions that plagued the archipelago. For this he gathered around him a circle of young and talented artists. One of the most important of these was S. Sudjojono, one of the main founders of Persagi (1938-1943), which would lead along with his many other achievements, the art critic Trisno Sumardjo declare him the "father of modern art in Indonesia" in 1949.

Born in Medan, Sumatra to a family of poor Javanese migrant workers, S. Sudjojono, tripped over size as a result of serendipity and pure talent. This would begin in 1925, when an admiring art teacher sent him to Jakarta. There he would gain an intimate insight into the prestigious Batavian Art District, presented the exhibitions of Beautiful Indies School and often revolutionary contemporary European art. In the process, he would also be introduced for many of Indonesia's now famous modern artists such as Affandi and Hendra Gunawan, who were also founding members of Persagi. would be

1947 Sudjojono perhaps the poignant depiction of the Indonesian struggle for independence - a large oil on canvas entitled "Revolutionary Comrades" (Kawan-kawan Revolusi). Unlike many images in the revolutionary genre, "Comrades" makes an attempt to glorify or embellish the theme. His real nobility mirrored in his dark and moody honesty. Here we see the greasy and tired faces of Indonesian men and women from all walks of life to remember to stare, with courage and steadfastness seemingly fallen comrades, lost youth and still more to come challenges.

Sudjojono manifested his concern for the welfare of ordinary people in the painting of peasants and workers. he would start in the 1970s to explore more surrealistic themes, often proposed alienation and disappointed with the brave new world that never appeared.

Seine were in his selection revolutionary credentials confirmed a huge mural in the Museum Fatahillah is to paint the Battle of Sultan Agung of Mataram (reigned 1613-1646) against Jan Pieterszoons Coen (1587-1629), the dour and stern founder of the VOC or the Dutch East Indies Company. Ironically painting is in the Dutch City Hall where Coen sat as Sultan Agung siege unsuccessfully the city down in 1628. In the late victories are often the best.

In 1985 S. Sudjojono would his last exhibition at the Ancol Art Gallery mounted together with Affandi and Basoeki Abdullah. He would pass away the following year in September. In the last phase of his life he was largely the clearly anti-aesthetic style of his youth. The most likely cause was the love that even the wildest revolutionary timeout.
